Moving Milton Forward

Moving Milton Forward,

A commentary by Dennis Wing

I have been aware of this phenomenon for quite some time but only recently had I learned there was a name for it. If this town is to finally turn the page, to “move forward”, as Selectman Rawson is fond of saying, then I think it would serve the “Town” to learn it as well.

“The Streisand effect is the phenomenon whereby an attempt to hide, remove, or censor a piece of information has the unintended consequence of publicizing the information more widely, usually facilitated by the Internet. It is an example of psychological reactance, wherein once people are aware something is being kept from them, their motivation to access and spread the information is increased.[1]” [Wikipedia]

Imagine how quickly the town could “move forward” if so much energy, effort and resources wasn’t spent (and wasted) on first by one party trying to keep hidden the undesirable and unflattering then another scouring about trying to expose these.

Open accountability and transparency serves both interests by moving beyond the silliness of chasing rabbits much in the same way the Washington buzzword, “bipartisanship” does at the Federal level.
